We’ve been told not to live in the past. But what if the past was really good? Joanne Shaw Taylor takes the best of the past and brings it all into modern living. The Brit adopted Detroit as her hometown and has channeled all the Motown greats into her being. Her latest album Reckless Heart doesn’t disappoint. Her gritty guitar playing paired with her soulful voice is a much-needed ear cleanse. Check out the lead single, “The Best Thing”. If Aretha, Janis and Mavis had a baby… Like what you read here? Alive in Barcelona makes social commentary so easy to swallow. Because the truth can be ugly, especially if you’re living it. “Zombies” is a song about going though life’s trivial moments and losing sight of opportunities ahead because you’re distracted with nothingness. According to the band: “Too many people spend time being possessed with material things… Zombie’s is about being present and focused. This is the first step in taking control of your life, and ultimately, battling depressive and suicidal thoughts.” The band is able to make real music—not noise. We always appreciate that ability. And now from the rock genre--Piqued Jacks. Honestly, we wouldn’t have known they were Italian. But a fellow scribe had this to say about the band: “These Italians understand the nuances of modern love.” – Impose Magazine Apparently, these ain’t no Jersey Shore Italians. PTL! These dudes can actually rock. Not this faux rock that passes for rock today. What we’re stoked about is the synth action along with the groove. This is music. Not noise. The real rock genre may have a shot at resurgence. Check out their tune, “Loner VS Lover”: Sweaty and rock-y. And Italian. Salute! Like what you read here? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That last part is not a guarantee. Over the course of a lifetime, it may feel like everything and everyone is against you. And that no one understands how you feel. But, you are not alone. Grammy award-winning duo for King & Country addresses that commonality in “God Only Knows”. We can’t really describe the magnitude of this song. Just listen for yourself. Powerful. Inspirational. There are days we just need this. Like what you read here? Boston Manor ain’t having it. They’ve grown a lot since their 2016 debut, and now they’re taking a stab at everything—including their lazy generation. “My generation is financially and culturally barren,” said vocalist Henry Cox. “We can’t afford to buy a house, we’re very much paying the price for our parents’ generation’s mistakes, but at the same time too f*cking lazy and distracted and comfortable to do anything about it.” Welcome to the Neighbourhood is their latest album, one that examines poverty, crime and drug addiction. Their song, “Halo” is about the scourge of heroin. Thank you, Hembree, for stickin’ something fresh yet throwback in our ears. Their single “Culture” mixes rhythm, old-school rock, and a dash of hip-hop with disinterested yet haunting vocals. Frontman Issac Flynn gives us insight into “Culture”. “These days we put so much emphasis on things that lack actual significance. Everything is urgent and I wanted to try to capture this urgency in a song and question what we prioritize. It’s about taking the time to stop and reflect; to think for yourself and establish your own opinions. The song also touches on the lengths people go to for status and power. There’s a realization that these qualities don’t actually equal happiness. Thus, ‘the king of the culture is never really free.’” Did you get all that? Now get this: P.S. In the band photo, love the first dude's (with the glasses) expression. It's like he's thinking: "Take the damn picture, would ya?" LOL Rockers with hearts. It’s so touching. Joe Walsh raised $795,000 in grants from his 2nd Annual VetsAid Concert. That’s more than double the amount raised from the inaugural event. The sold-out show featured performances by Walsh, Don Henley, James Taylor, Chris Stapleton, Haim, and Sir Ringo Starr. This year’s recipients include: Suiting Warriors, Hire Our Heroes, AMVETS Department of Washington, Salmon for Soldiers, Hero’s Bridge, Right Turn for Yuma Veterans, Work Vessels for Vets, Arkansas Run for the Fallen, MusicWorks4Veterans, and HeartStrides. VetsAid also awarded a $10,000 grant to Operation Good Jobs/Goodwill WA for assistance in co-producing the very first VetsAid Job Fair that took place the morning of the concert. Walsh feels a personal connection to veterans. He’s a Gold Star survivor whose father died while on active duty on Okinawa, Japan, when Walsh was a baby. The next VetsAid event is in Houston on November 11th. Hopefully, you’ve had that feeling at least once in your life. And hopefully, it will stick for that “forever” love kind of thing. That could be the point of the song “Drug” from Simple Creatures. Or it could be about that one summer where you just lost your mind and did a bunch of crazy stuff. Or maybe a little of column A and a little of column B. We wondered why this song is so on-point from a band we hadn’t heard of. When you take two alt rock powerhouses and put them together, you get magic. Mark and Alex are pals and were in between projects with blink-182 and All Time Low, respectively, so why not get together and make some sounds? For real, this song is addicting. The song title fits the artist: "For Real". That’s the name of one of the previously unreleased songs from the late Tom Petty. “For Real” is autobiographical, telling the real-life story of doing things for real. It’s quintessential Petty and The Heartbreakers, but it’s so… sad. We feel sad. Perhaps it’s because his Earthly departure came too soon and we’re not over it. Or perhaps it’s because there aren’t many authentic “real” artists making music in any genre. “For Real” is featured on Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: The Best of Everything, available March 1st. |
